It appears from this that the cost of

instituting a weekly service of parcels would be

£3,000. It is rather difficult to say whether or

not this is excessive as we have no information

as to the cost of the present service. If

a

£3,000 is/ comparatively small proportion of the

present cost the improvement should be worth while.

The fourth paragraph of this letter is,

however, so worded as almost to invite further

pressure, as both Hong Kong and the Straits have

asked that the service should be improved.

I think we may reply that this affords evidence

of a strong demand and that in view of it, and

if the additional expenditure does not represent

a very large percentage of the present cost, the

Postmaster General might now feel justified in

asking the Treasury to sanction the expense of a

weekly parcel service to the Far East.

Copies of correspondence should be sent to the

Governors of Hong Kong and the Straits Settlements. The Straits should also have copies of 2,3 and 4

on 30160/27, & H.K. shed have any of
